Peer Mentor Program

After MDR’s inaugural symposium, our participating high school students shared a need and desire to be mentored in media literacy by knowledgeable peers. MDR merged this concept with an opportunity to provide college role models for our youth. MDR’s Peer Mentor Program was born.

MDR provides trained college mentors to facilitate workshops for teens in middle, high school, and out-of-school-time programs in Los Angeles County. Our three-pillar approach helps schools and teachers fulfill several C.A. Content Standards (English Language Arts, History & Social Science, and Health Education) while fostering necessary dialogue among youth.

Our 4-week program covers the following:
· Misogyny & patriarchy
· Media & violence
· Gender stereotyping
· Identity & socialization
· Media & health

The project introduces participants to college mentors who facilitate 50 minute, interactive, media awareness workshops for students in the program. The workshops stimulate student dialogue and critical thinking about social issues in media and supports positive citizenship by providing healthy alternatives to destructive behavior.
